Thanksgibbing!

Yesterday morning, President Bush took the time out of his busy vacation schedule to pardon May and Flower the National Thanksgiving Turkeys. This has got to be my absolute favorite media event of the year. The president is presented with two turkeys, he gives a little speech, usually making a bunch of bad jokes about how the Vice President is a blood thirsty meat eating savage, kids run up and pet the birds, then turkeys get to go live in Disney Land forever. I guess it's because I love it when important people have to waste their time doing something silly. Also, putting the President of the United States next to a big goofy bird is always a recipe for hilarity. Plus, there is some historical mystery about the whole event. No one seems to really know when it started, some sources say Abe Lincoln pardoned a turkey. There are tons of pictures of Presidents pardoning turkeys on the Whitehouse website, if this sort of thing really gets you going.

Also, I'm going to take this opportunity to post this little movie A Day of Thanksgiving. Bill "around here they call me Dad" Johnson helps us to remember all the things his family was thankful for, even though they couldn't afford a turkey. American Propaganda at it's finest, golly gee!

Is it true that Pres. George Washington wanted the turkey to be our national bird?

No, that was Benjamin Franklin, I think Washington was more concerned with things that mattered.
